Practiced by Chinese healers for over 5,000 years, acupuncture is a holistic medicine dedicated to the attainment of a proper flow of Qi (ch’i), life-giving energy that travels through pathways called meridians to nourish every cell, muscle, organ, gland and tissue in the body. Acupuncture can help reduce discomfort arising from a range of ailments including allergies, the common cold, depression, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and fibromyalgia. According to Chinese medicine, in a normal, healthy body all organs function in harmony; the improper flow (blockage) of Qi disrupts this harmony. These blockages may be caused by physical or emotional trauma, inherited weakness of Qi, poor diet, environmental toxins or pollutants, or chemical, physical and emotional stress. During an acupuncture procedure, fine needles are inserted at specific points in the body along the meridians to break up blockages and restore a full, healthy flow of Qi -- without drugs or side effects. Additional practices may be recommended to supplement the treatments, including herbs, changes in diet, breathing techniques, massage, stretching, yoga or other exercise.
